“Visual storytelling is a Twentieth Century phenomenon.”
The evolution of how we watch has changed so dramatically. Around 2009/2010, my husband ditched our cable company and bought an antenna! I remember saying, in panic mode – “what about HGTV?” His response “You’ll survive!” And I did. Actually, I ended up appreciating the lack of SO MUCH to select from. Like most, we subscribe to what we want to watch today. Up to 2017, we had four TVs in our house. Today in our apartment, we have one in the den. And it’s more of an oversized monitor connected to the husband’s computer. And I have my MacBook. In answer to your probable question, we come together most nights to watch a series or movie. It works for us and our watching.
My favs this week
Documentary Series
Lenox Hill
Lenox Hill | Netflix...This is such a good doc/series. The patients are real patients with life-threatening issues. The Doctors are a newly formed team of neurology, emergency medicine, obstetrics, and gynecological surgeons. As a viewer, you become attached to these four Doctors and their personal involvement with their patients. Every hour was an exhilarating journey through life and death decisions. What made this a favorite was the highly personal dimension that the series created. I felt like I was part of the wellness team.
Voyage of the Continents
Voyage of the Continents | Amazon Prime…You’ll never look at a mountain range again without thinking “how’d that happen?” And once you watch the mesmerizing dance of the tectonic plates you’ll have a few answers. The graphic expertise is what makes this so fascinating, along with the narrator which glides you through the millions of years in the evolution of our beautiful planet – Earth.
Movies
She Said
She Said | Amazon…This compelling story of the investigation into sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein is gut-wrenching and fascinating. While watching, I kept thinking this had to be investigated and brought into the light by women. Sorry, guys, but the humiliation, denigration, and dismissiveness were well-emphasized for all women to recognize. For the journalists Megan Twohey and Jodi Cantor, the emotional toll is brought to the forefront with Carey Mulligan as Megan and Zoe Kazan as Jodi. The honesty and compassion in their acting were enthralling. Watch it!
Series
1883
1883 | Paramount+… This is not the Wagon Train series of the 50s. This saga captivated me. The hardships for both the settlers and the Indians were eye-opening and heartbreaking. The concept/storyline and especially the writing are outstanding. Thank you, Taylor Sheridan. Actors Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sam Elliott bring the raw exhaustion of crossing the dangerous plains to life. But, for me, the guiding light and star is Isabel May and her narration. It was poetic and mesmerizing.
1923
1923 | Paramount+… A continuation of the 1883 saga, both leading up to the contemporary Yellowstone. There’s not much more enjoyable than two fabulous lead actors to wrap us in an unforgettable story. Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford keep the momentum of the plot at higher than normal speed, which might leave Yellowstone lingering in the Great Plains of Montana.
Yellowstone
Yellowstone | Paramount+... I am an avid fan of the two prequels to Yellowstone, but not so much a fan of this original series. I found a few of the characters annoying to the point of distraction and, along the way lost interest in the storyline.
Stay tuned – next week, I’ll tell you all about my three-season infatuation with Ted Lasso…I’m smitten!
And please do share your favs in the comments. I’d love to know what you’re watching.

September 21, 2023 at 8:39 pmRecently my husband and I visited Highclere Castle, the real Downton Abbey. It was a magical day which I will not soon forget. As we wandered through every room which was still so ingrained in from the tv series, I was taken with the fact that this was a real place inhabited with real people, and made Downton Abbey seem that much more special. So, I am watching it all over again, and enjoying it even more, knowing these are real rooms with stories to tell.
